இலண்டனில் வசிக்கும் நண்பன் முரளி சிறுவர்களுக்கான புத்தகங்கள் மற்றும் திரைப்படங்களின் பட்டியல் ஒன்றைத் தயாரித்து அனுப்பச் சொன்னான். அந்தப் பணியை என்னைவிட என் மகனே  செய்தால் நன்றாக இருக்குமென்று தோன்றியதால் அவனிடம் கோரிக்கை வைத்தேன். உடனே அனுப்பிவிட்டான்.

ஏ ழாவது சொர்க்கத்தின் எல்லையில் "ஸித்ரத்துல் முன்தஹா" என்கிற "ஷஜாரா" இருக்கிறதாம். ஸித்ரத்துல் முன்தஹா என்றால் எல்லையின் முடிவில் இருக்கும் இலந்தை மரம். ஷஜாரா என்றால் பெருவிருட்சம். ஆயிரம் கோடி சூரியப் பிரகாசம் சூழ அமைந்த அந்த பெருவிருட்சத்தின் வேர், ஆறாம் சொர்க்கம் வரை நீள்கிறதாம். வேர்ப் பகுதியிலிருந்து ஸல்ஸபீல், கவ்ஸர், நைல், யூப்ரடீஸ் ஆகிய நான்கு பெருநதிகள் உற்பத்தியாகின்றதாம். விருட்சத்தின் இலைகள் யானைகளின் காதுகளை ஒத்ததாகவும், அதன் இலந்தைப் பழங்கள் பெரிய கூஜாக்கள் போலவும் இருக்குமாம். மரத்தைச் சுற்றிலும் எப்போதும் தங்கத்தினாலான வெட்டுக்கிளிகள் பறந்துகொண்டே இருக்குமாம். ஸித்ரத்துல் முந்தஹாவைத் தாண்டி யாருமே செல்ல முடியாதாம். பூமியிலிருந்து மேலே கொண்டு செல்லப்படும் உயிரினங்கள், அவற்றின் செயல்களைப் பற்றிய குறிப்புகள் யாவும் இறுதியில் இந்த விருட்சத்தைத்தான் சென்றடைகின்றன. அதே போல மேலேயிருந்து கீழே கொண்டு வரப்படும் இறைக்கட்டளைகளும் இங்குதான் வந்தடைகின்றன. இவை இரண்டுமே வானவர்களால் பெற்றுக்கொள்ளப்படுகின்றன என்று ஒரு ஹதீஸ் சொல்கிறது. இன்னொரு சுவாரஸ்யமான செய்

த மிழில் எழுதப்பட்ட மிகச் சிறந்த காதல் கதை எது என்று யாரேனும் என்னிடம் கேட்டால், சற்றும் யோசிக்காமல் புதுமைப்பித்தனின் ' செல்லம்மாள் ' சிறுகதையைத்தான் சொல்வேன். பாரதியின் கண்ணம்மாவைவிட புதுமைப்பித்தனின் செல்லம்மாவை எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடிக்கும். தமிழ் சிறுகதை இலக்கியத்தின் உச்சத்தைத் தொட்டவர் புதுமைப்பித்தன். He is truly an unparalleled genius. மனிதர்களிடம் அவர்கள் உருவாக்கிய 'கடவுள் என்பவர் யார்?' என்று கேட்டால், நமக்கும் மேலான சக்தி என்று கூறுகிறார்கள். அந்த வகையில் பார்த்தால் 'செல்லம்மாள்' கதையை எழுதியவர் நிச்சயம் அந்தக் கடவுளாகத்தான் இருக்க வேண்டும்.  புதுமைப்பித்தனே தான் எழுதிய 'காஞ்சனை' சிறுகதையில் தன்னை 'இரண்டாவது பிரம்மா' என்றும் 'நகல் பிரம்ம பரம்பரையின் கடைக்குட்டி' என்று அழைத்துக்கொள்கிறார். காஞ்சனை கதையை எழுதிய அதே வருடம் (1943) செல்லம்மாள் கதை எழுதப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. எழுதியது பிரம்மனாக இல்லாத பட்சத்தில், அந்த இரண்டாவது பிரம்மா உருவாக்கிய 'காஞ்சனை' பிசாசுதான் ஒருவேளை 'செல்லம்மாள்' கதையை எழுதியிருக்க வேண்டும்

நா ட்குறிப்பு எழுதுவது எளிது. அது நாமே நமக்காக எழுதிக்கொள்வது. என்ன வேண்டுமானாலும், எப்படி வேண்டுமானாலும் எழுதிவிட்டுப் போகலாம். ஆனால், ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட பார்வையாளர்களுக்காக எழுதுவதற்குத் தனித்திறமை வேண்டும். குறிப்பாக குழந்தை எழுத்தாளர்களை நான் வியப்புடன் பார்க்கிறேன். குழந்தைகளுக்கு எழுதுவதென்பது ஒரு சவாலான விஷயம்; அத்தனை எளிதானதில்லை. உதாரணத்துக்கு, மாணவர்களுக்கான தினமலர் பட்டம் இதழுக்காக "வானவில்" பற்றி நான் எழுதிய எளியதொரு அறிவியல் துணுக்கை எடுத்துக்கொள்வோம். அது மொத்தம் மூன்று வழிகளில் எழுதப்பட்டது. இறுதியாக, மூன்றாவது வடிவமே இதழில் பிரசுரிக்கப்பட்டது. பட்டம் இதழின் உதவி ஆசிரியர் பொன். வாசுதேவன் அவர்களுக்குத்தான் நன்றி தெரிவிக்கவேண்டும். ஒரு இதழில் ஆசிரியரின் பங்கு என்னவென்பதற்கு உதாரணமாக இதை எடுத்துக்கொள்ளலாம். பக்கத்துக்குப் பக்கம் எழுத்துப்பிழைகளோடு புத்தகங்கள் வெளியிடப்பட்டுக்கொண்டிருக்கும் நிலையில், இஃதோர் அரும்பணியன்றோ.  வாசித்துப் பாருங்கள். புரியும்.   ஒன்று - "வானவில்லுக்கு எத்தனை நிறங்கள்?" வானவில் ஒரு கண்கவர் வளிமண்டல நிகழ்வு. குழந்தைகளாகட்டு
